How to Choose Flooring for Your Young Child's Room
Flooring for a child's room needs to be both practical and comfortable. And it is nice if it looks good too. That can be a tall order when selecting flooring so here are a few tips to help you make the right choice.
Think About Comfort
Carpet is the most comfortable flooring for a child's room and when they are still at the stage of sitting on the floor playing or crawling around it is nice to have something soft and warm on the floor. Choose a good quality wool carpet which will shrug off stains and can be easily cleaned.
Think About Cleanliness
Although it appears that our immune systems actually suffer if everything is too sterile in early childhood, you may have a concern about the cleanliness of carpets. And it is true that they are not so easy to clean as hard floors. If you wish to put hard flooring in a young child's room so that it can be easily washed, do consider softening the surface in two ways. First of all, think about using a cushioned hard flooring such as good quality sheet vinyl which is not so hard on a child's head should they fall (and there are a lot of falls when they are first learning to walk). Also consider adding a rug to the floor so that the have somewhere comfortable to sit. You can buy washable rugs these days which can be popped in the washing machine and there are some great kids rugs which double as play mats too.
Think About Color
Either choose a very neutral color for the floor so that you can add any color you like with furnishings and accessories or go to town and have fun with the flooring because this is one of the few rooms in your home where it makes sense to do that! Even if your carpet or flooring is neutral have fun when you add an area rug or two.
